Splitrock Camp Host Leader 

Splitrock Farm and Retreat offers guests access to 101 acres of land, which includes beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean to the southwest and Big Bear and Mount Jacinto to the northeast. Hipcamp named Splitrock its #1 Glamping site in America for 2023. Guests have access to 6+ miles of walking and biking trails, including the Splitrock 5K (3.12 miles) that covers most of the property and all the key features and viewpoints. Splitrock is located 5 miles from downtown Fallbrook, 13 miles from wine tasting in Temecula, and a mile east of Camp Pendleton Nature Preserve. 

As our Camp Host Leader, you will be responsible for managing our team of Camp Hosts who assist with camper communications, clean and upkeep our campsites, and facilitate a welcoming and supportive environment for guests. This position offers a unique opportunity to blend hospitality management with hands-on farm experience, all while enjoying the tranquility of our natural surroundings.

Camp Host Team Responsibilities

Your team of Camp Hosts are responsible for the following duties and responsibilities, therefore you will be responsible for overseeing and managing the Camp Hosts and these responsibilities:

  • Communicate with campers before and after their arrival to provide essential information, answer questions, and ensure a smooth check-in and check-out process.
  • Coordinate inquiries, reservations, and add-ons (Camp Shop, Experiences, Events) through email, phone, or online platforms, maintaining accurate records and calendars.
  • When requested by the guests, personally welcome guests upon arrival and provide orientation to the campground facilities and amenities.
  • Monitor campground areas for cleanliness, safety, and compliance with rules and regulations, addressing any issues or concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Update the booking apps with new sites, photos, descriptions, add-ons, or other information as required in this growing campground and retreat. 
  • Assist with campsite general maintenance activities as needed, including gardening, landscaping, and facility upkeep. Keep common areas clean, including bathrooms, communal kitchens, storage, and the Camp Shop. 
  • Foster a warm and inclusive atmosphere for campers, volunteers, and community members, embodying the values of hospitality, respect, and environmental stewardship.

The Camp Host Leader’s Responsibilities 

  1. Managing the team of 2-8 Camp Hosts by recruiting, training, scheduling, communicating, and reporting on the duties and responsibilities that the Camp Hosts are required to complete as detailed above. This includes:
    1. Monthly Scheduling of Camp Host shifts
    2. Daily delegating tasks to hosts (e.g. daily turnovers, bathroom cleaning, tent set-ups, weed abatement)
    3. Monthly procurement of glamping inventory, shop items, and cleaning supplies. 
    4. Bi-montlhy reporting shift hours
  2. Communication with guests through apps, text, phone, and email is a primary responsibility of the Camp Host Leader. The Camp Hosts conduct most of the communication during their shifts, however the Camp Host Leader must carry the Camp Phone when the Camp Hosts are off-site. A response is expected within 15 minutes for guests on-site or within an hour for all other enquires that happen during normal business hours (typically 3-7PM but subject to change). All enquiries should be responded to within 24 hours, however the expectation is to respond as soon as possible to maintain 5-star customer service ratings. A Camp Host phone will be supplied that has the Camp Host number and all apps required. 
  3. Be on call for urgent situations (e.g. fires, sanitation, unauthorized parties) to assist and alert guests, especially if the owner is away. 
  4. Quarterly Listing management – keep the listings updated on Hipcamp and our website Splitrock.Camp. Add new sites and they develop. Branch Out Glamping are responsible for updating their content, however the Leader will liaise with those partners to ensure proper content. 
  5. Finalize and update as needed the Camp Hosting collateral and documents. These include the Guest Arrival Instructions, Camp Host Guidebook, Glamping Information Books, and signage.

Expected Shifts and Hours

The Camp Host Leader is not expected to cover any Camp Host shifts, and is not expected to work specific hours. They can make their own schedule for administration tasks as long as they are completed on-time (e.g.shift reporting on the 5th and 20th of each month). Guest communications can occur at any time, however rarely take more than a few minutes each time and typically 2-10 guests contact us throughout the course of the day. The typical workload for the duties is 5-12 hours per week, with an average of 10 hours per week. It is expected the hours may be higher when a new Camp Host Leader begins, however implementing and following proper systems for scheduling and communications will ensure efficiency and reduce redundancy.

Camp Host Leader Remuneration

The Camp Host Leader main responsibilities are included in a work-trade situation. The average of 10 hours per week as detailed above are trade for living at Splitrock Farm. As a reference, a private site at Splitrock will rent for $200-800/week depending on location and seasonality. Nearby crowded RV parks charge at least $400/week.  

Camp Hosts at Splitrock Farm and Retreat have the ability to earn income through Camp Shop shifts, campsite cleaning and maintenance, events, classes, and recreational activities. These income opportunities are optional and limited. These are subject to change at any time with written notice. 

  • Work Camp host shifts. Campsite maintenance and cleaning shifts pay $25/hr and Camp Host shifts in the Camp Shop pay $20/hr. 
  • Camp Shop sales. We stock firewood, mugs, S’mores Kits, and other camping needs and forgetful items. Camp Hosts will receive a generous share of sales revenue for unique craft or snack items they procure or create for the shop.
  • Facilitate, coach, or teach wellness, fitness, art, and education offerings. Splitrock Venues includes a yoga platform, geodome, amphitheater, catering kitchen, FarmFit exercise area, and MindFit Hike. We like to offer yoga, soundbaths, breathwork, and more…. What can you offer? Rate is negotiable based on experience and demand.

What Camp Hosts can Expect from Splitrock

Accommodation

  1. Our Camp Host may bring their own home, usually a van, skoolie, or RV. We are off-grid, so solar power and battery backup is a must as we rarely allow the disturbance of generators, and never at night. Water hook-up is available.
  2. Rent our 2021 Jayco 38th Farmhouse Camper with double slide outs and a king bedroom. It has enough solar to power everything within reason except A/C that is rarely needed. Cost to rent is $600/month.

  1. All Camp Hosts are welcome to take any open seat for free in most of our wellness and fitness activities. This includes yoga, soundbaths, guided hikes, and much more. Splitrock hosts regular live music and community events to participate, volunteer, or attend. 
  2. Access to amenities and facilities offered by the retreat, including hiking trails, meditation spaces, a communal kitchen, and more.

Camp Host Leader Qualifications

  • Previous experience in hospitality management, campground hosting, or customer service is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with diverse individuals and handle guest inquiries and concerns with tact and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities, with attention to detail and a commitment to delivering exceptional guest experiences.
  • Passion for sustainable living, outdoor recreation, and community building.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
  • Comfortable with living around free range farm animals, including goats and people-friendly guard dogs. There are opportunities to work with the animals if desired, however it is required that you enjoy being around animals.
