Please watch for the large signs on Harris Trail that say Splitrock that notify you before you get to the black entrance gate. If you do not see the signs and gate, then you have not traveled far enough along Harris Trail.

See the bottom of this page for Specific Site Directions from the Entrance Gate

Darkness

Be prepared for the darkness, as the area has Dark Sky regulations that protect stargazing and help campers feel far away from home. Please plan to arrive before dark and be sure to download the site map. On-Site Amenities

Toilets and Showers

There are multiple toilets and hot shower locations at Splitrock Farm and Retreat that are accessible by all guests and only a 1-5 minute walk from any of the campsites.

  1. The Oak Grove Communal Area has two flushing toilets and sinks and one hot shower and one cold shower.
  2. There is a flushing toilet and hot shower at the outhouse located at Splitrock Valley at the end of S. Dawes Drive.
  3. The Steelboxes across from the Splitrock Spring and Camp Shop has a flushing toilet and 2 hot showers

Water

Many, but not all, of our campsites have a water spigot attached to San Diego City water that is potable. Some campsites also have sinks. There are communal sinks at the Oak Grove. Please check our interactive sitemap for water locations.

Trash & Recycling

We follow “Pack-in, Pack-out” here at Splitrock. We are a rural, primitive, off-grid property with limited trash service, therefore, we cannot take all your trash. We have noticed guests unpacking groceries, Walmart bags, REI tents, etc., when they arrive, and leaving packaging at the sites. We understand that some waste can occur from normal camping activities. However, this is much more trash than a normal camping trip should produce and should be avoided.

Trash left at a campsite is not just dangerous, as it poses a threat to both our wild and domestic animals, it also pollutes our beautiful land and damages our environment. We ask that you please comply with our Pack-In, Pack-Out policy and that you take your trash to the dumpster on-site. It is located on the road leading into the property, you will see it on your right as you exit.

Any trash left behind will be fined $20 PER BAG or ITEM then needs to be collected. If an animal rips open a bag and we have to pick up all the spilled items, it is $20 PER ITEM. PLEASE BE VERY CONSIDERATE OF YOUR TRASH.

Campfires

Campfires are critical to a great camping experience, so please follow our rules so that we can keep our fire privileges!

*IMPORTANT: CAMPFIRES ARE ONLY PERMITTED IN ESTABLISHED FIREPITS*

Please only burn dry wood and refrain from burning paper or leafy materials that can be carried to surrounding brush. Keep fires small and well within the firepits provided.

Please ensure that all fires are completely exhausted before leaving the area – extinguish properly and cover with dirt until all coals are cool and you can place your hand above the fire without feeling any heat.

Campers found to build fires outside permitted areas will be charged a $100 fine and you will be asked to leave the property. In the event an unpermitted fire causes damage, you will be held financially responsible to pay for at least 50% of the fire department response and any damages sustained.

Firewood

We sell firewood onsite at the Camp Store for $1/log (cash, credit card, or Venmo accepted). You may also purchase this from us before you arrive as an add-on and prepay via Venmo to @SplitrockFAR.

You may bring your own clean, bundled wood. Please do not collect wood from the grounds. NO BURNING PALLETS OR CONSTRUCTION WASTE WOOD.

Animals

Keep children in sight and pets on leash, as there is a variety of farm animals that free roam the grounds (goats, alpaca, sheep, pigs) as well as many species of wildlife that visit frequently, including coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, foxes, snakes, hawks, spiders, and more.

We also have two Great Pyrenees dogs who patrol the property as large guardian dogs – they are sweet, loving dogs to all humans and pets – but they keep the coyotes and bobcats from attacking the free-range goats. The goats, sheep, alpacas, pigs, and Pyrenees dogs are all free range, and will often visit sites for food, water, and attention, as most love to be petted and adored.

Pets

Please keep your pets on a leash at all times so that they do not engage with the wildlife, or chase our goats! Your pups may find it fun, but our animals really don’t like it 🙁

Our Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs may also kick into gear to protect our goats from your dogs, so please keep them at a safe distance and leashed at all times. We do not want any injured goats from curious, instinctual dogs, or any injured dogs either!

Rattlesnakes

Rattlesnakes live here! Please take caution and read the below, but also understand these creatures are not aggressive. If you or someone else are bitten by a rattlesnake, do not wait – seek medical attention immediately. Splitrock is not staffed or equipped to deal with medical emergencies.

As background, in a study, scientists used a fake leg to simulate a person stepping on a rattlesnake. Out of 175 snakes that were physically “stepped on” by the booted foot, only six bit the leg.  The rest tried to get away, froze in place, or wriggled in surprise but didn’t react aggressively. It’s actually really hard to get bitten by a rattlesnake! They just want to be left alone.

Rattlesnakes also don’t rattle before striking.  A rattle doesn’t mean aggression, it’s an “Hello, excuse me, I’m down here!” They rattle to tell you, or other large animals, that you are about to step on them, since they blend in very well with their surroundings and they’d rather you didn’t smush them accidentally.  Strikes are generally noise-free acts of last ditch desperation.

Only about 1% of rattlesnake bites are deadly, and those that are generally happen in situations where medical care was delayed.  A quarter of rattlesnake bites don’t actually involve any venom at all, they are “dry bites” intended as a warning only.  As long as you get to a hospital in a reasonable amount of time, you will very likely be just fine.  This is not a situation where minutes count, just move promptly towards medical care.  The deadly bites generally happen in very remote areas, when people are hiking alone, or when drugs and alcohol are involved, since all of these can increase the amount of time it takes someone to get to help or result in poor decision-making.  First aid for a bite?  Just get the person to a hospital, promptly, but safely.  There is nothing else you need to do, and anything you might think about doing is just wasting time getting the person to a hospital and potentially complicating things by rubbing germs into the wound or further stressing the currently stressed tissue in the area.  Don’t ice it, tourniquet it, or suck on it, just call 911 or start hiking back to the trailhead.

The anti-venom products ERs use are combination formulas, which work for multiple North American venomous snake species.  One works for multiple species of rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, and copperheads.  A second anti-venom product works for various rattlers if you know you heard a rattle but aren’t sure of the exact species.  Coral snake bites can be identified by looking at the bite itself by hospital staff because the venom works on the body differently and there is a separate antivenom product that works for them.  All of this means you don’t need to try to take a closeup picture of the snake that bit you, coax it into a box to bring with you, or kill it to bring in and show to the doctors.  In the case of rattlers, copperheads, and cottonmouths, they have what they need to treat a bite without knowing exactly what species of snake it was, and in the case of coral snakes, can figure out that one bit you without seeing the snake.  Don’t waste time or risk a second bite messing with a snake that is already very upset.

Noise

Please help keep Splitrock the natural and calming environment that it is. Splitrock is not a party place – we are aiming to foster a space where we can reconnect with nature. You will be asked to leave if you are disturbing the peace.

These rules are strictly enforced:

We reserve the right to ask anyone to turn-off amplified sound at any time if it can be heard at nearby sites.
  • GENERATORS: Quiet generators under 70db are allowed between 8am and 8pm. We reserve the right to ban all generators if they disturb other guests who come to hear nature and avoid loud vibrations.

Please note, when visiting Splitrock Farm and Retreat, you may hear military training exercises coming from nearby Camp Pendleton. The coastal and mountain terrain support a variety of training exercises at the base which can often be heard from campsites throughout the day and sometimes into the evenings.
